João Botelho inicia filmagem de “Os Maias”
Adaptação da obra de Eça de Queiróz será filmada em Lisboa e Ponte de Lima com orçamentod e 1,5 milhões de euros.
O realizador João Botelho inicia na segunda-feira a rodagem de “Os Maias”, “romance imenso e desmedido” de Eça de Queiróz, um projeto que demorou dois anos a concretizar, num tempo em que “está tudo péssimo no cinema português”.
Numa conferência de imprensa em Lisboa, para apresentar o projeto, o produtor Alexandre Oliveira explicou que “Os Maias – (Alguns) episódios da vida romântica” é um filme “bastante ambicioso”, que será feito com um orçamento de 1,5 milhões de euros.
João Botelho demorou dois anos para por de pé este projeto, do ponto de vista financeiro, transpondo para cinema o texto original de Eça de Queirós, “um romance muito atual”, cheio de camadas, política, sociológica e “de intriga, muito radical”.
“A ideia da repetição e do eterno retorno português está neste romance. Está também o fim das elites e o fim de Portugal. É um romance sobre uma família, mas está cheia de arquétipos, de representantes de grupos sociais. O cinismo é o mesmo. A demagogia dos políticos, a verborreia, o comportamento da elite portuguesa mantém-se”, sustentou.
O realizador, que volta a unir a literatura portuguesa ao cinema, fez uma adaptação do romance de Eça como se fosse um libreto de uma ópera.
Isso irá traduzir-se, por exemplo, com grande parte da rodagem marcada para estúdio, com cenários feitos com telas gigantes, pintadas por João Queiroz, que recriarão exteriores de ruas em Lisboa, em particular no Chiado, para “recriar uma Lisboa de ópera”, disse João Botelho.
Essas telas gigantes deverão ser utilizadas pela autarquia de Lisboa para o Museu da Cidade, numa recriação de Lisboa no século XIX.

The adaptation of Eça de Queirós’ novel will be filmed in Lisbon and Ponte de Lima with a budget of 1,5 million euros .
Director João Botelho will start filming “The Maias” this Monday, “a great and immeasurable novel” by Eça de Queirós, a project that took two years to accomplish, in a time where “everything is terrible in Portuguese cinema”.
In a press conference in Lisbon to present the project, producer Alexandre Oliveira explained that “The Maias – (Some) episodes of the life in the romantic era” is a “quite ambitious” film, which will be made with a budget of 1,5 million euros.
It took João Botelho two years to prepare this project from a financial point of view, transposing to film the original text by Eça de Queirós, “a very up-to-date novel”, full of layers, politics, sociology and “very radical intrigue”.
“The idea of repetition and the eternal Portuguese return is in this novel. The end of the elites and the end of Portugal is also here. It is a novel about family but it’s full of archetypes, of representatives from social groups. The cynicism is the same. The politicians’ demagogy, the verbiage, the behaviour of the Portuguese elite is the same”, he said.
The director, that once again puts Portuguese literature and cinema together, adapted Eça’s novel as if it were an opera libretto.
This will be reflected, for example, in sceneries made with giant canvases (with a great amount of studio filming), painted by João Queiroz, which will represent outdoor scenes of Lisbon streets, in particular the Chiado, in order to “recreate an operatic Lisbon”, said João Botelho.
The Lisbon municipality will use those giant canvases in the City’s Museum, in a recreation of Lisbon in the 19th century.
