Joe’s Introduction + small translation

Hi, I’m Joe, I’m from Newcastle in England and currently studying Italian and Portuguese at the University of Salford. I’ll be at FLUP for this semester studying translation and improving my knowledge of Portuguese. In the future I’m looking to possible progress with a future in translation, by first studying a masters in it. On aspect that I find interesting with translation in regards to films is how the titles can be translated and also looking more in-depth at the subtitles and how they translate cultural specific phrases.

Here is a short text I translated about the film “CAPITÃES DE ABRIL” it was a short synopsis about the film from RTP website.

Olá, o meu nome é Joe, sou de Newcastle (Inglaterra) e encontro-me a estudar Italiano e Português na Universidade de Salford. Vou estudar na FLUP durante um semestre a estudar Tradução e a melhorar o meu Português. No futuro, gostava de trabalhar no campo da Tradução, mas antes gostaria de fazer o Mestrado nessa área.

Acho interessante o modo como títulos e como certas expressões específicas de uma cultura são traduzidos.

Aqui têm um pequeno texto que traduzi sobre o filme “Capitães de Abril” – uma curta sinopse sobre o filme retirada do site da RTP.

 

Uma bela homenagem à memória de Salgueiro Maia e ao dia que mudou Portugal, num filme de Maria de Medeiros.

Na madrugada de 25 de Abril de 1974 o Rádio Clube Português emite a célebre e interdita canção de Zeca Afonso, “Grândola”. Trata-se um código combinado com o clandestino Movimento das Forças Armadas que nessa madrugada levou um grupo de capitães a executar um golpe de estado e acabar com o regime do Estado Novo. O capitão Salgueiro Maia marcha com o seu regimento sobre Lisboa, decidido a tomar a capital sem derramamento de sangue. Entretanto, Manuel, um outro veterano da guerra de África, toma com um punhado de camaradas o Rádio Clube Português que se vai transformar no centro difusor do progresso da revolução., a mulher de Manuel, desconhecendo as actividades do marido preocupa-se com o destino de um aluno, preso pela PIDE. Maia chega a Lisboa e com a ajuda de Gervásio, consegue levar os seus “Chaimites” até ao Quartel do Carmo, onde recebe a rendição de Marcelo Caetano. Nas ruas o delirante entusiasmo popular aclamava os capitães de Abril.

 

A beautiful homage to the memory of Salgueiro Maia and the day that changed Portugal forever, all told in the film by Maria de Medeiros

At dawn on the April 25, 1974 the Rádio Clube Português transmits the forbidden song by Zeca Afonso, “Grândola.” This is a code in which the Armed Forces Movement made up of several young army captains started the coup d’état which ended the regime of the Estado Novo. Captain Salgueiro Maia marched his regiment to Lisbon and managed to take the capital without any blood being spilt, this was all done at the same time as another officer took control of the offices of the Portuguese radio club which became the center of information on the revolution. Antónia the wife of Manuel, oblivious to the actions of her husband, is worried about a student that was taken by the PIDE (Portuguese secret police). She arrives in Lisbon with the help of Gervasio and manages to reach the “Quartel do Carmo” with the military convoy where they receive a surrender by Marcelo Caetano. In the streets the people are all enthusiastic and proclaiming them to be the “captains of April”.

Olá. Chamo-me Ana, tenho 24 anos e quero ser tradutora profissional no futuro próximo. Gosto muito de filmes, livros e gatos.

O filme de animação “Feral”, de Daniel Sousa, realizador português nascido em Cabo Verde, está nomeado para o Óscar de melhor curta-metragem de animação, anunciou hoje a Academia de Cinema dos Estados Unidos.

“Feral” conta a história de um menino selvagem, uma criança que se tenta adaptar à civilização, depois de ter sido encontrada num bosque, onde cresceu.

Este é o sexto filme de Daniel Sousa e soma mais de uma dezena de prémios entre os cerca de quarenta festivais de cinema onde foi exibido, nomeadamente o de Annecy (França), onde recebeu três distinções em 2013.

  Short Film by Portuguese Daniel Sousa Nominated for an Oscar

The animated short “Feral”, by Daniel Sousa, a Portuguese director born in Cape Verde, is nominated for the Oscar of Best Animation Short Film, as announced today by the American Film Academy.

“Feral” tells the story of a “wild boy”, a child who tries to adapt to civilization after being found in the woods where he grew up.

This is the sixth film by Daniel Sousa and it has received more than ten prizes at the  many film festivals where it was exhibited (approximately forty),  particularly in Annecy Film Festival (France) where it earned three awards in 2013.

Olá! O meu nome é Joana e estou no curso de Línguas Aplicadas à Tradução na FLUP, na cidade do Porto. Gosto de musica, línguas estrangeiras e cinema, entre outras coisas. Sonho em viajar por todo o mundo e conhecer várias culturas diferentes. Interessei-me por Tradução quando comecei a comparar o diálogo presente nos filmes com as respetivas legendas. O mundo da legendagem e da dobragem fascina-me, pelo que gostaria de ter a oportunidade de um dia trabalhar nesse campo. Adoro comunicar com pessoas de todo o mundo, algo que tive oportunidade de fazer em atividades internacionais como Escoteira – esta experiência fez com que abrisse os olhos para a importância de nos compreendermos uns aos outros, uma das grandes funções da Tradução.

Hello! My name is Joana and I study Applied Languages – Translation at FLUP, in Porto.My interests include music, foreign languages and cinema. I dream of travelling around the world, and getting to know many different cultures. My interest in translation began when I started comparing subtitles to the actual dialogues in films while I was learning English. I’m very interested in the subtitling and dubbing world and therefore I hope that one day I have the opportunity to work in that area. I also love talking to people from around the world which I had the opportunity to do several times as a Scout during international activities. That made me realise the importance of people understanding each other which is one of the main purposes of translation in the first place.

Curta-metragem de Miguel Gomes estreia-se hoje no Festival de Veneza

A curta-metragem “Redemption”, do realizador português Miguel Gomes, estreia-se hoje, no Festival de Cinema de Veneza, que cumpre a 70.ª edição. O filme, uma ficção de 26 minutos co-produzida com França, Alemanha e Itália, é exibido fora de competição e assinala a estreia de Miguel Gomes em Veneza – o mais antigo festival de cinema na Europa – depois de já ter tido obras selecionadas e premiadas nos festivais de Berlim, Cannes, Locarno, Toronto ou São Paulo. “Redemption” acompanha quatro personagens em épocas distintas – uma criança em Portugal, em 1975, um idoso em Milão, em 2011, um pai em Paris, em 2012, uma noiva em Leipzig, em 1977 – à procura da redenção, de acordo com a sinopse da produtora O Som e a Fúria.

Short film by Portuguese director Miguel Gomes premieres today at the Venice Film Festival

The short film “Redemption”, by Portuguese director Miguel Gomes, will have its premiere today, at the Venice Film Festival, which is on its 70th edition. The film, a 26 minute-long fiction co-produced with France, Germany and Italy, is shown out of competition and marks Miguel Gomes’ debut at Venice – the oldest film festival in Europe – after having other works selected and awarded at the Berlin, Cannes, Locarno, Toronto and São Paulo festivals. “Redemption” follows four characters in different times – a child in Portugal in 1975, an old man in Milan in 2011, a father in Paris in 2012, a bride in Leipzig in 1977 – looking for redemption, according to the production company’s (O Som e a Fúria) synopsis.

Olá! O meu nome é Mariana e estudo Tradução na FLUP, na cidade do Porto. Gosto muito de música, séries de televisão, videojogos, cinema e moda. Desde que era pequena, sempre gostei de línguas e de culturas estrangeiras. Soube aí que queria trabalhar nesse campo, pelo que decidi que a Tradução seria uma boa carreira para mim. O meu interesse por esta área começou quando, ao ouvir músicas no meu mp3, as traduzia mentalmente para português. Embora goste bastante de tradução multimédia, prefiro tradução técnica.

Hi! My name is Mariana and I am a translation student at FLUP, in Oporto. I love music, tv series, videogames, cinema and fashion. Ever since I was little, I’ve always loved languages and foreign cultures. I knew that I wanted to work with something that was related to languages, so I decided translating would be a good carreer for me. O caso remonta a Agosto de 1999, quando um casal foi encontrado assassinado em sua casa, em Ílhavo, num crime que a Polícia Judiciária admitiu estar ligado a rituais litúrgicos de apologia satânica. The case dates back to August 1999, when a couple was found murdered in their house, in Ílhavo, a crime which the Judicial Police admitted to be related to satanic liturgical rituals. Later, Tó Jó, the couple’s son, confessed his crime, admitting he did it all by himself, although pressured by his then-girlfriend, who was also his partner in the death metal band Agonizing Terror. However, even though Tó Jó was considered guilty and is now serving a sentence of 25 years, the facts about this case remain unknown. The versions he told to the court are doubtful, namely when he claimed to be alone at the night of the crime, night which corresponded to the last day of the solar eclipse of the millennium.
Inspired by this fateful event, the directors Edgar Alberto and Alexandre Valente (“Second Life”) recreated a story where comedy mixes with tragedy . With a strong cast, with actors like Pedro Fernandes, Sofia Ribeiro, FF, José Wallenstein, Rute Miranda or António Raminhos, and musical guests like Virgul, André Sardet, Heber Marques, Diogo Dias, Toy, Mikkel Solnado or David Antunes.

Daisy’s Introduction + small translation

Hi! My name is Daisy Temperton and I study Modern Languages at the University of Sheffield in England. I’m currently studying at FLUP in the Universidade do Porto as part of a six month Erasmus placement, and I am enjoying living here and learning Portuguese so much! I’ve always loved languages and travelling, I’ve been lucky enough to be able to visit several French, Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries and practise my languages there. I also love to watch films and television series from these countries, and I suppose it’s from here that my interest in translation arose; it is something that’s not often thought about but is necessary for people from other countries to be able to enjoy these programmes and films. I’ve always known that after graduation I would want to work in something related to languages, and am realising more and more each day that translation would be the ideal sphere for me.

Olá! Chamo-me Daisy Temperton e estudo Línguas Modernas na Universidade de Sheffield, em Inglaterra. De momento, estou a estudar na FLUP, na Universidade do Porto, inserida num programa de Erasmus de seis meses, e estou a gostar muito de viver aqui e de aprender português. Sete Pecados Rurais 
Quim Roscas e Zeca Estacionâncio, os locutores de «TV Rural», vão chegar ao cinema num filme de Nicolau Breyner.

SINOPSE
Quim e Zé vão buscar duas primas afastadas de Lisboa, que pretendem reviver o Verão louco de há dois anos em Curral de Moinas, mas esbardalham-se fatalmente num rebanho de ovelhas.
Quando chegam ao Céu, Deus oferece-lhes uma segunda oportunidade de voltar a Curral de Moinas. Terão de lhe provar que abdicarão de uma vida amoral e libertina, renunciando aos sete pecados capitais: luxúria, gula, ira, inveja, avareza, soberba e preguiça.
Isto, por si, já seria um desafio quase impossível mas, para tornar tudo mais animado, cada vez que Quim e Zé vacilam perante o pecado são chamados “lá acima” ou vem Deus “cá abaixo”. Será que Quim e Zé resistem à avalanche de tentações que lhes são oferecidas?

Seven Sins

Quim Roscas and Zeca Estacionâncio, the presenters of “Rural TV”, are coming to cinema screens in a film by Nicolau Breyner.

SYNOPSIS
Quim and Zé go to Lisbon to look for their two distant cousins, who are planning to relive the crazy summer of two years ago in Curral de Moinas, but they are involved in a fatal accident caused by a herd of sheep.
When they arrive in heaven, God offers them a second chance to return to Curral de Moinas. They will have to prove to him that they can give up their former immoral lives, renouncing the seven deadly sins: lust, gluttony, wrath, envy, greed, pride and sloth.
This in itself would already be an almost impossible challenge, but to make matters worse every time Quim and Zé give in to one of the sins they are called “up above” or God comes “down below”. Will Quim and Zé be able to resist the barrage of temptation offered to them?

Francisca’s Introduction + Small translation

Hi! My name is Francisca and I am currently studying English Literature at FLUP, in the picturesque city of Porto. I can’t exactly pinpoint what triggered my love for Translation, but I believe it had something to do with the fact that I’ve always been surrounded by books, some of which I had in both my native language (Portuguese) and in English. I used to spend hours comparing the English approach to books I had read in Portuguese. It was a lot of fun and something I still do sometimes!
Here’s a short paragraph I have translated for you. I hope you enjoy it! If you have any suggestions to improve the aforementioned translation, feel free to leave them in the comment section below.

Olá! Chamo-me Francisca e estudo Literatura Inglesa na FLUP, na pitoresca cidade do Porto.  Não sei precisar ao certo o que despertou o meu interesse pela Tradução, mas julgo ter a ver com o facto de ter estado sempre rodeada por livros, alguns dos quais tinha tanto na minha língua materna (português), como em inglês. Costumava passar horas a comparar a abordagem inglesa aos livros que havia lido em português. Era muito divertido e é algo que ainda faço de vez em quando!

  Squatter Man – Um Filme Português financiado por crowdfunding

Está em curso a campanha de crowdfunding para o projecto de longa-metragem cinematográfica “Squatter Man”, o primeiro filme a ser produzido pela Squatter Factory – sonho de vida de Luís Campos (argumentista do sucesso indie “Um Funeral À Chuva” e agora principal produtor e realizador de “Squatter Man”).

“Squatter Man” será produzido sem qualquer financiamento público ou apoio financeiro pré-adquirido. Toda a equipa envolvida (técnicos e actores) participarão como voluntários e algum apoio logístico será fornecido através de instituições locais e empresas parceiras.

 

  “Squatter Man” – A Portuguese film financed through crowdfunding

A crowdfunding campaign is up and running for “Squatter Man”, a project for the making of the feature-length film, the first film to be produced by Squatter Factory – Luís Campos’ lifelong dream (scriptwriter of indie success “Um Funeral à Chuva” and now executive producer and director of “Squatter Man”).

“Squatter Man” will be produced without any public funding or pre-required financial support. All crew and cast members (technicians and actors) will take part as volunteers and local institutions and company partners, are willing to help with logistical support.

Chiara’s Introduction + Small translation

Olá! Eu sou a Chiara e estou a estudar Línguas Aplicadas à Tradução na FLUP. Sempre gostei de aprender línguas (se calhar também porque já tinha a vantagem de saber 1 a mais do que a maioria das pessoas que conheço, sendo eu uma italiana que se mudou para Portugal) e então decidi estudá-las e viver disso (pelo menos esse é o objectivo!). Gosto muito de ler, ver filmes e séries e de animais. 🙂

  Animação portuguesa candidata aos prémios de cinema Goya

A curta-metragem portuguesa de animação O gigante, de Júlio Vanzeler e Luís da Matta Almeida, está nomeada para os Goya, os prémios de cinema que são atribuídos neste domingo pela Academia de Cinema de Espanha.

O filme português foi seleccionado para a categoria de “Melhor curta-metragem de animação espanhola”, por ter Espanha entre os países co-produtores (além de Portugal, Brasil e do Reino Unido).

Com cerca de dez minutos e argumento de Nélia Cruz, a partir de uma ideia de Júlio Vanzeler, o filme estabelece uma narrativa sobre pais e filhos e o processo de crescimento, a partir da história de um gigante que transporta a filha no coração, sendo ele a mostrar-lhe a realidade.

O gigante é o primeiro filme co-realizado por Júlio Vanzeler, até aqui conhecido sobretudo como ilustrador de livros para a infância e juventude, feito em parceria com Luís da Matta Almeida, fundador da produtora de cinema de animação Zeppelin Filmes.

Este é o único filme português seleccionado para os Goya 2014, os mais importantes prémios de cinema atribuídos em Espanha. Portugal tinha apresentado uma candidatura ao Goya de melhor filme ibero-americano, com A última vez que vi Macau, de João Pedro Rodrigues e João Rui Guerra da Mata, mas a longa-metragem não chegou às nomeações finais.

A edição deste ano dos Goya é dominada por La gran familia española, de Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, nomeado em 11 categorias, entre as quais melhor filme, melhor realização e melhor argumento original.

A cerimónia dos vencedores dos prémios Goya realiza-se no domingo à noite, na capital espanhola.

 

Portuguese animation nominated for the Goya movie awards

Portuguese animated short film “O gigante”, by Júlio Vanzeler and Luís de Matta Almeida, is nominated for the Goya Awards, which will be attributed this Sunday by the Spanish Academy of Cinematic Art and Science.

The Portuguese film was selected for the “Best Spanish Animated Short Film” category, since it has Spain among its co-producers (besides Portugal, Brazil and the United Kingdom).

Com cerca de dez minutos e argumento de Nélia Cruz, a partir de uma ideia de Júlio Vanzeler, o filme estabelece uma narrativa sobre pais e filhos e o processo de crescimento, a partir da história de um gigante que transporta a filha no coração, sendo ele a mostrar-lhe a realidade.

The 10-minute film that originated from Nélia Cruz’s screenplay, based on an idea by Júlio Vanzeler. It is a narrative about parents and children and how they grow up together, through the story of a giant that carries his daughter in his heart and shows reality to her.

“O gigante” is the first film co-produced by Júlio Vanzeler, famous until now mainly as a children and young adults’ book illustrator, in partnership with Luís da Matta Almeida, founder of the animated movie production company Zeppelin Filmes.

This is the only Portuguese film selected for the Goya 2014, the most important movie awards in Spain. “A última vez que vi Macau” by João Pedro Rodrigues and Jõao Rui Guerra da Mata was nominated for best Ibero-American film, but didn’t make it to the final nominations.

“La gran familia española” by Daniel Sánchez Arévalo’s is at the forefront of this year’s edition of the Goyas with 11 nominations, including best film, best director and best original screenplay.
